    I have been coaching swimming for 18 years and working with children since I was 12. I have attended many swim coaches’ conferences where the speakers proclaimed their love of the sport of swimming. I realized that for me the motivation was the swimmers. I love coaching swimmers. There is so much more to coaching swimmers than the sport. There is an entire person in front of you learning about discipline, work, teamwork, self-reliance, independance, responsibility, the pursuit of excellence and, of course, swimming. The swimming sometimes becomes the conduit to teach many other concepts.

    I now understand about loving swimming because I have recently become a competitive swimmer myself. It has given me additional insights to the process of becoming a swimmer. I can now say I love swimming, but I coach because I love swimmers.
